Hello, friends!

My name is Josh, though some call me “ExtraBarbecue” or “BBQ.” I love golf and exploring new courses. As I searched the internet, I came across countless “best of” course lists. While these lists feature bucket-list-worthy, stunning courses, most are expensive, inaccessible, or intimidating for new or high-handicap players. I’ve enjoyed playing courses, but I often felt like a guest rather than someone who truly belonged. This realization sparked a journey to discover what I call “weird” or “unique” courses.

What is a weird course?
First, let me say that when I call something “weird,” I mean it as a badge of honor and in the best possible way. I love weird, I am weird, we are weird—and it’s that uniqueness that makes us awesome.

By “weird,” I mean unique. The courses on this list are here because they have an unusual design, an interesting feature, or are located in an unexpected place. Some courses might seem perfectly “normal” at first, but then surprise you with an out-of-this-world hole or feature. Others might be considered weird because they’re built in extraordinary places, like Death Valley or the Northwest Territories, or because they have sand greens or lack fairways entirely.

What’s weird to me might be normal to you, and vice versa—and that’s part of the fun!

How it started:
This project is a labor of love. It all began when I posed a question to Reddit, and the community responded with overwhelming enthusiasm. I received over 400 responses—an amazing reaction, especially since it was my very first Reddit post! As I read through the comments, I thought organizing the suggestions by region would be fun so others could explore the weird courses near them. That idea turned into a spreadsheet and, eventually, this website.

What I hope to achieve:
I love exploring new courses and uncovering the stories behind them. Through this project, I hope to highlight these amazing works of art and shine a spotlight on those who deserve more love. I want to talk to the people who create and care for these courses and hear their stories. I hope you’ll join me on this adventure.
